Karen Buckley - author

My passions in life are women and their families in the sacred birthing space. I love helping people reach their full potential …… remember who they really are.

I have been a Midwife for 19 years. I did my training at Royal Women’’s Hospital in Paddington, Sydney, Australia. It was a major teaching hospital. I learned so much there. I saw so much there. Both good and bad, the beautiful and the extraordinary. I didn’’t agree with everything but I saw some breathtakingly special moments when women who let themselves go, to just be…….. flowed with their bodies and their babies.

I retired from hospital midwifery in 1999 when I was about to have my first child and returned to work in hospital birthing in 2013 to keep my experience relevant.

I have two beautiful boys. I attempted two home births and ended up having c-sections because of two little upside down breech babies.

I also run my own business that focuses on helping people change the way they think about themselves and their potential. This book is a union of my two fields of expertise and passions. It was inspired by my sister’’s journey into motherhood, of my gorgeous nephew Ezra.

Gabbi Lancaster - Artist

I love to create art which captures and expresses the intense feeling and beauty of this incredible time in a woman’s life, celebrating the power of being pregnant.

My art making practice is primarily in painting and drawing. My unifying desire is to explore the full spectrum of human emotions associated with feelings of belonging, connectedness and oneness.

I have had three home births and am passionate about uplifting and transforming our beliefs around birthing. Ever since my first child was born, I have wanted to share my experience and inspire women to have more positive births.

The artworks in this book are from life sessions with pregnant women and are in pastels, watercolour, ink and acrylic paint.

I began Pregnant Portraits in 2004, drawing and painting women in late pregnancy by commission.
